Originally Tina Louise's character was patterned after Marilyn Monroe,both in mannerisms and look, so Louise, who herself had long hair,wore the wigs to match Monroe's shorter style. Later in the series Ginger's look moved away from the Marilyn/1950's style towards the longer, 60's style and for the most part Tina Louise used her own hair though she did return to wigs from time to time.
