in the book, Lt. Greenwald (Ferrer) was a pilot who had crashed into a barrier, suffering burns and had been recovering and was waiting to be called back to his squadron. When Maryk and Keith meet him for first time in movie he refrences a crash (and I had thought they meant auto), but since they did not film the movie exact as the book and what work that would be involved to show him with burns, maybe it was an easier way get as close to the book. Maybe other scenes that would have brought this to light were cut from final version.
