Gary Clarke played 'Steve Hill'. He was interviewed in Paul Green's "A History of Television's The Virginian" and stated that he got too cocky and demanded more episodes be built around his character. They instead dropped him after the second season.

Gary Clarke is alive and well ... and looks GREAT even though he's in his 70s. We should all look that good when we are his age. I met him in Virginia City, NV where the cast of The Virginian had a reunion. James Drury Roberta Shore and Randy Boone were all there ... all of them friendly, eager to answer questions and just chat.

I think Mr. Clarke said he was currently writing plays and either directing them or producing them in Texas. And I'm sure he's busy with other things. He still has that same "Steve Hill" fun and frolic, and he is very good comedienne. Meeting him was a highlight of the year for me.

Gary Clarke began his screen career with the 1958 film  "Dragstrip Riot". He went on to work in other films, including "How to Make a Monster" and "Missile to the Moon" (both 1958), "Date Bait" (1960) 1st title choice "Jail Bait" didn't fly in 1960 Hollywood lol and few years later "Passion Street U.S.A" in 1964. In the 1960-1961 season, he appeared as (Dck) Hamilton(they made me remove the i)🙄 in the single season NBC television series Michael Shayne. Clarke also appeared as Tad Kimball, a friend of the character Jess Harper, played by Robert Fuller from Laramie. Remember the TV series with Robert 'Bob' Fuller, 'Emergency from 1972-79. Series ended in 1977, but six 2 hour TV movies carried it into 1979. As of August 2020 Robert Fuller is still alive at is ranch, born July 29, 1933 (age 87).

In July 2003, Clarke and Drury, along with two other The Virginian co-stars, Roberta Shore and singer Randy Boone, were guests at the Western Film Fair in Charlotte, North Carolina. Sadly James Drury, (The Virginian) passed this past April 2020, he was 85. It was good to see some of his friends & fellow cast members from The Virginian get to reunite before Drury's passing. Gary & several from the cast went on to do many things. Roberta Shore she left The Virginian to get married & raise a family. They moved to SLC, Utah as they were mormon. Not sure how true it is, but I read Hollywood blackballed her for breaking her 7 year contract, if true, probably the best thing that happened to her. James Drury has a son Timothy Drury an active musician that plays keyboard & has played in several big name bands like Whitesnake, Eagles, Stevie Nicks and Crago, Don Henley and Brian Adams, maybe more. His KB talent is amazing.

As of August 2020 Gary Clarke, born Clarke Frederick L'Amoreaux August 16, 1933 (age 87) is still alive. Last, I just found out recently, remember the old TV series "Get Smart" produced by Mel Brooks, anyway Gary Clarke wrote several story lines, some of the best ones involving Chaos vs Maxwell Smart lol.. who would have figured lol 👍
