because they were both virgins and weren't sure how everything was supposed to go so they argued about what happened and what to do after. by the way that's my favorite movie.

EDIT:

I think it was because they were virgins (as said above) so it was like a trail. They tried it but both found it uncomfortable, resulting in neither of them really enjoying it (You know, because neither of them knew what to do) and then they just both felt really insecure about it because the nervous feeling they both felt just made them not feel natural and go with the flow, in result, they kind of regretted it because they both weren't prepared or knew what to do.
