It was because of his mother and father. They died to save him, and that kind of act leaves a mark. Their love for him was so strong that it protected him from the killing curse. It is said that it was agony to touch someone marked with something so good. So, as a result, the curse rebounded off Harry and struck Voldemort. Voldemort then became non-human, he became more of a spirit. He needed to share a body with someone. Not being truly alive, he could not be killed.

∙ 10y agoThat is what the prophecy that Sybil Trelawney made said. Sevurus Snape overheard Trelawney tell this to Albus Dumbledore, so then gave this information on to Voldemort. Voldemort then tried to kill Harry when he was one year old, but didn't succeed.

He explains, or helps Harry to figure out, that while Voldemort has just killed the part of his own soul that was embedded within Harry, Harry is still alive because Voldemort reconstituted his own body out of Harry's blood (in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Because Voldemort contains Harry's blood, as long as Voldemort is alive he preserves Lily Potter's charm, so Harry can't die at his hand.
