because he survived the killing curse, avada kedavra, from lord voldemort. the only person to survive it!! spooky!
Harry Potter, the Avada Kedavra killing curse he cast rebounded upon him. Voldemort's body was destroyed, but his spirit survived: he is neither dead nor alive. Meanwhile, the orphaned Harry is left with a distinctive lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, the only physical sign of Voldemort's curse. Harry is the only known Survivor of the curse, and Voldemort's mysterious defeat causes the wizarding community to dub Harry "The Boy Who Lived". Harry is protected by the enchantment that was produced when Harry's mother died while protecting him from Voldemort. This protection will last until his 17th birthday.

Well, it certainly is a great story. Read them, and see for yourself. (However, not all people have the same tastes, so you may, or may not, like them.) well who wouldn't like them? they are the most amazing books ever and if you don't like them there is obviously something wrong with you.

Harry Potter books are good because the books:

1. ,unlike Tolkien, do not bog down with the mundane descriptions and details. They stay focused on the plot while weaving in the background, settings, and characters.

2. cover many genres (mystery, fantasy, sports, satire, Horror, comedy, etc.)

3. elicit multiple emotions (happiness, sadness, suspense, anger, etc.)

4. have "average guy and accomplices" heroes who make mistakes and have their faults - readers can relate.

5. not everybody lives happily ever after - realism.

6. use plot twists, narrative misdirecting, irony and enigmatic techniques in relating the story.

7. depict personal, emotional, and character growth progression as Harry gets older.

7a. portray character development and complexity in all of the main characters.

ex. Hermione's Boggart in her third year was Professor McGonagall telling her that she had "failed everything," which Rowling later commented showed that "underneath Hermione's studious arrogance there is a lot of insecurity and a great fear of failure."

8. fantasy is familiar. It is simultaneous to our real world; not a completely foreign world that readers to have to struggle with in order to relate.

9. use of hidden names meanings to legends and cryptic messages add intrigue.

ex. Hermione's Patronus, an otter, is Rowling's favourite animal. The otter is in the family Mustelidae, the same as the weasel, which is the origin of the surname Weasley. In addition, the Weasleys live in Ottery St. Catchpole, possibly foreshadowing Hermione's marriage into the family.

10. deal with the most important coming-of- age issues of rivalry, rebel to authority, peer approval, fitting in, self confidence with the opposite sex, cliques, family relationships and conflicts.
