Country Music started to gain some popularity in the 1920's, but wasn't actually referred to as Country Music until sometime in the 1940's. Before then it was referred to as "Hillbilly Music".

Also, radio broadcast played a big part in popularization of country music. Such names as Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers made a big impact on the future of country music. Aditionally, migration of rural whites into large cities brought country music to other areas and became more and more popular.
