To quote from the book... "We used his specs," said Simon, smearing a black cheek with his forearm, "He helped that way."
After Jack leaves to go to Castle Rock, Piggy becomes more confident with himself, and starts to stand up for himself. This happens because Jack stole Piggy's glasses, and now he can no longer hide behind his disability of not being able to see.
When Jack accused Piggy of not helping much with the building of the fire in chapter2: Fire on the Mountain Simon defended Piggy by mentioning that they had used Piggy's spectacles to light the fire so he had helped in that way.
"Ralph stirred uneasily. Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy, who grabbed it. The twins giggled and Simon lowered his face in shame." this is the whole paragraph.
Ralph interrupts and bitterly accuses them of irresponsibility for letting the fire burn out. The hunters, still in the grip of the thrill of the hunt, ignore him. Ralph once again tries to make them realize the enormity of their blunder. In quick and angry retaliation, Jack strikes out at Piggy, forcefully slapping his face and breaking one lens of his glasses

Ralph defends Piggy from Jack when he refuses to help with the fire. Ralph argues that Piggy contributes by thinking and suggesting ideas, even if he is physically unable to help. Ralph recognizes Piggy's value to the group beyond just physical labor.

The glasses symbolize the voice of reason and logic among the boys. Piggy defends his glasses even more than the conch. Piggy, who represents the superego of the boys' (and society's) collective personality, uses his glasses to find solutions to the boys' problems. The most important solution the glasses find is the lighting of the fire, the boys' best chance of being rescued.
