Actually Across the Universe isn't even a band. Its a musical about the Vietnam War. Theres a whole bunch of singers in it. My favorite is T.V carpio who sings I wanna hold your hand, a remake of the orignal Beatles song :]

The song is credited to Lennon/McCartney, but was apparently written by John Lennon alone, during a sleepless night: "I was lying next to my first wife (Cynthia) in bed." Odd phrases kept popping into his head, not letting him sleep, so he got up to write them down. The song developed from that.

"Across The Universe" was considered for the B-side of "Lady Madonna" early in 1968, but Lennon was never satisfied with how the recordings or mixes turned out. One mix was given to the World Wildlife Fund, for a 1969 charity album titled Nothing's Gonna Change Our World. (This version appeared later on Rarities, and Past Masters.)

The Beatles rehearsed "Across The Universe" during the Get Back sessions (with Paul McCartney providing harmonies), but didn't fully remake the song. When Phil Spector remixed songs for Let It Be, he went back to the original multitrack tape from 1968, lowering the pitch and overdubbing an orchestra and choir. Lennon said later that Spector "did a special job" on the recording, to make it more palatable.

The same multitrack tape was remixed again for Let It Be - Naked, leaving out Spector's changes and adding increasing amounts of reverb in the last verse.
