Sweeney Todd is a musical thriller and a tragedy of a horribly wronged barber seeking revenge on his mortal enemy. In the play, everyone has a goal based on love: Sweeney is seeking revenge because he loves his wife and wants the judge to pay for what he's done, Mrs. Lovett wants Sweeney because she is in love with him, etc.

Johnny Depp played the role of Sweeney Todd in the 2007 movie. Other well known Sweeney's (from the musical) are George Hearn (1980 and 1989 production), Len Cariou (1980 production), Michael Cerveris (2005 revival). Non musical movie versions of Sweeney have included Tod Slaughter (1936 black and white version based on the original A String of Pearls story) and Ray Winstone (2006 BBC version of Sweeney).
Sweeney Todd won Best Musical in 1979.
I assume you are referring to Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd, which was made into a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. There have been quite a few totally, completely different versions of the Sweeney Todd story. For example, Ben Kingsley stars as Sweeney Todd in a version that could not be more different. There's no revenge story, no Lucy and Johanna, no Judge Turpin, etc. In the Ben Kingsley version, Sweeney is a greedy villain, rather than a tragic character motivated by revenge.Anyway, in Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Judge Turpin is Sweeney's principal enemy.

The story of Sweeney Todd started out as a periodical in the Penny Dreadfuls under the name of "A String of Pearls". Soon after this, various stage versions emerged and over time it became a popular urban legend that has been adapted into many musical stage productions, books, and films. The most well known storyline of Sweeney Todd comes from Stephen Sondheim's popular musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which was started in 1979. The story of Sweeney was made even more popular by a more recent film version of Sweeney in 2007, directed by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp as title role.
No, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a musical that was written by Stephen Sondheim. Tim Burton made a movie version of this musical. To my knowledge, in an opera, all of the dialogue is sung. In a musical, the dialogue is spoken, but interrupted by various musical numbers. In other words, in an opera, they sing every word. In a musical, the dialogue is spoken, but the characters periodically launch into a song-and-dance.
