The original song was written and demo recorded by Steven Georgiou, better known as Cat Stevens. It was released on his album New Masters in 1967, which failed to chart. He sold the song to P.P Arnold for 30 quid, and it became a huge hit for her. Later it became an international hit recorded by Rod Stewart, James Morrison, Keith Hampshire, and most recently by Sheryl Crow.
Stevens, having converted to Islam, is now known as Yusuf Islam, and has won 2 consecutive ASCAP (Songwriter's Association) awards, along with many others for "First Cut is the Deepest".
