It was first recorded by Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds. Known also as Mbube, it sparked a style of singing that continues to this day, as exemplified by the famous singing group, Ladysmith Black Mombasso.

I Believe you are on the wrong , err jungle trail. the song (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) also known as wimoweh, was originally recorded by the Tokens. unfortuneatly for its (Sleep tight, the situation is secure) motive, Lions, like most jungle animals tend to prowl about int he nocturnal hours! Lion King is an atheist Disney production. The song Lion sleeps tonight was recorded by the Tokens and I believe also Robert John which was actually a group.
