The Tokens wrote the song orignally

No, in fact, they didn't. Their version of the song was the most famous within the United States in the 1960s, but it was originally written by a South African man named Solomon Linda, in the 1930s. It was first recorded by Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds. Known also as Mbube, it sparked a style of singing that continues to this day, as exemplified by the famous singing group, Ladysmith Black Mombasso.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_Sleeps_Tonight, Mbube (b not k) means "Lion" in Zulu, and Solomon Linda with his band was the original recording artist and the writer of the song.
