The Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards are considered the four major entertainment awards in American show business. They are each presented annually, the awards honor outstanding achievements, respectively, in film, television, music, and theater. Winning all four awards has been called the Showbiz Award Grand Slam or EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).

The first person to accomplish this unusual achievement was Richard Rodgers (1902- 1979). He was an American composer of music for songs, Broadway musicals, films and television. He is best known for his songwriting partnerships with the lyricists Oscar Hammerstein II. His compositions have had a significant impact on popular music down to the present day, and have an enduring broad appeal.

  • He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for: State Fair (1945) Shared with: Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics) For the song "It Might as Well Be Spring"
  • He won three Tony Award in 1950 for South Pacific: Best Musical, Best Score and Best Producer
  • He won a Grammy Award in 1960 Best Show Album for Sound of Music (1960) Shared with Oscar Hammerstein II
  • He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composed for Television for: "Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years" (1960)

He also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 for South Pacific. Shared with Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan

Composers Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch were the only people to win Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards, in addition to a Pulitzer Prize. Rodgers (1902-1979) was the first person ever to achieve EGOT status (winning the four entertainment awards) in 1962. He and his frequent collaborator Oscar Hammerstein II were awarded a special 1944 award for their musical "Oklahoma!"

Hamlisch (1944-2012) was acknowledged with a 1975 Pulitzer for his music for the Broadway musical ''A Chorus Line'' (shared with lyricist Edward Kleban, director Michael Bennett, and book writers James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante).
