The Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit was conceived by Michael E. DeBakey and other surgical consultants as the "mobile auxiliary surgical hospital". It was an alternative to the system of portable surgical hospitals, field hospitals, and general hospitals used during World War II. It was designed to get experienced personnel closer to the front, so that the wounded could be treated sooner and with greater success.
The novel "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors" was written by Richard Hooker, a former military surgeon.
The film "MASH" based on the aforementioned novel was directed by Robert Altman, produced by Ingo Preminger and written by Richard Hooker and Ring Lardner Jr.
The television series "MASH" also based on the novel, and intended as a continuation of the film was created by H. Richard Hornberger developed by Larry Gelbart and written by dozens of writers over its lifespan.
