When did color movies become popular?

Unlike the sound influx- Warner Bros- Vitaphone- which took place in l927 and was rapidly adopted industry-wide. Color was phased in slowly- there were hand-colored color prints of ( Joan, the Woman, for example which was made around l9l5. Film, biography of Joan of Arc, starred Opera star Geraldine Ferrar in the title role. Color Film is older. the French Lumiere ( which means light) company had what they called Autochrome patented in l903- but not phased into production until about l907 . It has an odd, unnatural and somewhat underexposed look. I have seen it in old postcards of Coney Island- the model of the Grand Canal of Venice. Nothing new under the sun.
