Brian Allsop, introduced as "Sugar Bear" by Carlos Wilson on an episode of Soul Train, played bass for Mandrill between 1975 and 1977. Not much more info is available on him, except that he played for several other groups, and I believe he was a studio musician for the Village People. I don't think he is still living.

What character replaced Sugar Bear as the the Sugar Smacks spokescartoon for a time in the '70s?

Actually, Sugar Bear was the spokestoon for Sugar Crisp, not Sugar Smacks. The spokestoon for Sugar Smacks was Dig'Em the frog. I have the vague recollection that Sugar Bear briefly went away before returning as "Super Bear" while the cereal itself was renamed "Super Golden Crisp," but I don't think he was actually replaced.
