In the movie L.A. Confidential, Det. Lt. Edmund Exley narrated to Sgt. Jack Vincennes that Rollo Tomassi was the name he gave to the unnamed purse snatcher who shot his father and got away clean. Exley said that he (Rollo Tomasi) was the reason he became a cop - to catch those who think they can get away with it. Then, when corrupt Capt. Smith suddenly and unexpectedly kills Vincennes, those are Vincennes' dying word as he realizes the Capt. is the one trying to get away clean. These final words puzzle Smith, and he thinks Rollo Tomasi is real and might be important. Later, Capt. Smith asks Exley if he knows who Rollo Tomasi is. Exley, supremely clever, puts it all together instantly and realizes the only place Smith could have heard the fake name Rollo Tomasi is from the one man Exley told, the dead Vincennes, and that therefore Captain Smith is the main bad guy.
