A lot of people feel that it is a reference to Sex and Drugs. Crimson being sex, clover being weed or some other sort of drug.. Buttt....

When asked himself, the songwriter and artist, Tommy James said that it was because Crimson was his favorite color and clover was his favorite flower. That it sounded so poetic when combined that he just had to write a song using that phrase.

The wonderful feeling of a man seeing a woman and falling in love with her at first site. The Crimson represents Love and the Clover represents how seldom this experience happens and the fact that it is only his fantasy.
