Duke Ellington played it, but the interesting part is that Duke had a writing partner whose name I can't for the life of me remember, who wrote the song as he was reading the directions that Duke gave him about how to get to Duke's apartment...on the A-train route in NY. William Thomas (Billy) Strayhorn used the directions to Mr. Ellington's home as the lyrics writing an original compostion. The result was "Take the A Train".
