According to Wikipedia. com, Patrick Moraz played the keyboard for The Moody Blues. Originally, it was Mike Pinder. The Mellotron that he used gave The Moodies their distinct sound. After he left, Patrick Moraz played, followed by Bias Boshell and Paul Bliss. (Paul is still touring with them.)
Additional informationMike Pinder was one of the co-founders of the group in 1964 and he played the piano as well as writing a number of songs (usually with Denny Laine) and providing backing vocals. When Laine and bassist Clint Warwick left (and the latter's temporary replacement Rod Clark) in the summer of 1966, Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined and the band went in a different direction. They adopted a much more progressive rock sound (sometimes referred to as classical rock), at which time Pinder used the Mellotron (a past master since he worked at the factory in the early sixties). By 1972's Seventh Sojourn, he had moved on to the Chamberlain. In 1974, the band went on hiatus to work on solo projects, coming together for 1978's Octave but Pinder was no longer interested and didn't want to tour.Patrick Moraz was brought on board to support the tour for the album and became fully involved in the four albums made during the eighties (starting with Long Distance Voyager and finishing with Sur la Mer) focusing on swooping keyboards and helping to move the band's sound into the eighties. In 1991, just as the Keys of the Kingdom album was being recorded, Moraz was dismissed from the band (and subject to litigation as a result).
Since that time, the band has taken the decision not to have a full-time keyboard-player, although they have been supported by a number of musicians including Bias (Tobias) Boshell, Paul Bliss, Tony Visconti, Danilo Madonia and a number of others on tours (including one to support The Present in the eighties when Justin Hayward used to play his Casio keyboard during a performance of Running Water).
Offcially, then, only Mike Pinder and Patrick Moraz have been band members.
