Gordon Lightfoot was a guitar player, so I would say there is a good chance he was the Guitar player. Did you mean who was the backup player?

Actually, Gordon is a guitar player, but he always considered himself to be the backup player. His lead guitarist in the 70's was Terry Clements, who has been his lead guitarist right up to the present. He had a succession of guitar players in the 60's including - David Rea, Bruce Langhorne, Red Shea, and then session musos in the early 70's, then Terry Clements.
