Because when it was first released, it wasn't known as Episode 4. The original trilogy films were supposed to be the only ones. But after nearly 20 years, George Lucas decided he wanted to expand the storyline so we can actually know the events that happen before the original films

Yoda was not in the the original Star Wars. Yoda first appeared in "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980, where he was voiced and controlled by puppeteer Frank Oz.
