Janis Joplin never sang The Rose. She died in October of 1970 and the song wasn't written until 1979. Bette Midler performed the song. The song was written and first preformed by Amanda McBroom, which is why it was not eligible for an Oscar as best song from a movie.

No, Janis died long before 1979 when the film was released. The song was written for the film. It would have been a cool song for her to sing though and even better duet.
