The actress I believe you are speaking of is/was Jane Froman. She lost a leg in a World War II or shortly after freak airplane accident in the Pacific theatre. She was not popular in the period you mention, but a film was done on her ( of the problem-novel) type and had the misleading title (With a Song in My Heart). ( that could be anything, even Elvis). She actually died sometime in the eighties as I recall. having long been retired from any film work- handicap considered. there may be another one, but that is the only one I can think of- Jane Froman- not to be confused with Wyman.

Jane Froman had ONE leg amputated after war era Plane accident, but that is just one. Thee have been rumors of some actress, who died shortly-maybe one or two years after the (Cut) who was given, this is gross humor-the Playing Card treatment, that is Both legs removed.

I believe the lovely young actress, a brunette, was swimming in Big Bear Lake, California, in the 1950s or 1960s, when a motor boat ran over her, cutting off both of her legs.

There have been several. Sarah Bernhardt ( in l9l4 when well past her prime), Suzan Ball, who had cancer and eventually died as a result ( in l954 or 55), Jane Froman- war injury from airplane accident. There may be others. One learns to get a little suspicious of handicaps in talk-show or quiz show personalities who are always photographed from the waist up and stting down, they may have cards they are not showing! Oh yes, and Zsa Zsa Gabor ( accident) Bernhardt, Froman, and Gabor were results of vehicular accidents, directly or indirectly, Suzan Ball had a cancerous growth on one leg.
