He is a serial killer who killed Patrick Jane's wife and daughter. Before Jane started working for the CBI, he was a fake psychic, and he publicly insulted Red John (this was before he had any connection to him and before his family was killed). then Red John killed his family for revenge, saying he didn't like being slandered in the media. His signature is that he kills females, cuts them up, and watches them die slowly, then paints a smiley face on the wall with their blood. they still haven't caught him.
This is a reference to the main antagonist. His title is Red John and all episodes but the pilot have this reference.
If it's Bosco from The Mentalist...he dies in his hospital bed, after whispering Jane something in his ear about red John. (episode 8, season 2)
To show he was @ the restaurant at the beginning of the episode. It was one of the main fundamentals that one, didn't you watch it?
I don't know, but this mightbe helpful? : )Red John is a fictional character and the leading antagonist on the CBS crime drama The Mentalist. He is an infamous serial killerwho began killing in 1998, and may have killed at least twenty eight (now around thirty) people in California, Nevada, and Mexico. Five years prior to the action of the first episode, he murdered the wife and the daughter of protagonist Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), making Jane his dedicated nemesis.[1]In the Season 3 finale, "Strawberries and Cream (Part 2)", Jane kills Red John.[2] The man was portrayed by Emmy and Golden Globe Award -winning actor Bradley Whitford.[3] However, after this "cliffhanger" episode, it was determined by Jane that the man he killed was not Red John after all in the Season Four premiere.

The color red is significant in The Mentalist because it is the color that the main character, Patrick Jane, associates with the serial killer known as Red John. Red John is a key antagonist throughout the series, and his presence is symbolized by the color red.
