There isn't really a solid answer for this question however take this for example my parents used to watch The Muppets which "Kermit," stars in and to them he would have been famous

However our generation grew up with rug rats and spongebob to entertain us and for a child of this day and age would most likely not know who kermit is but they would know of spongebob because of the popularity and merchandise around the media.
