I think Dede has always had a thing for Lio so her marriage with Jaimito was never truly solid. She's always wanted a chance with Lio, and the fact that she never did, made her get the feeling of settling. She settled for Jaimito, for her marriage, and she never got the chance to really know what she wanted. Dede just stuck with the path that she was set to walk from childhood.
they were assassinated while driving, but Dede and her husband were not there when it happened. so they are still alive.

When Jaimito says this to Dede, he is talking about how her sisters contributed to the revolution and rebelled against the government while Dede did not help. But Dede was the sister who lived and therefore is the one to take care of the orphaned children who were left behind after their mothers' deaths and the one to tell the true story of the Mirabal sisters. Dede's martyrdom is to live her life without her sisters by her side and in this way she is doing something her sisters never did. Dede is different in this way.

Dede is a character from the novel "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez. She is one of the Mirabal sisters who is the only one to survive the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. Dede plays a significant role in preserving her sisters' memory and legacy.
As told by Dede, the epilogue tells what happened to the three Mirabal sisters who died on their way back home from a prison visit. It tells of the sisters being ambushed by men who beat and choked them to death, then pushed the jeep over a cliff with the sisters in it. It tells of the trial of the murderers and what happens to them. Dede is visited constantly by people who heard what happened to her sisters, until she accepts no more. Dede also meets Lio at a reception in honor of her sisters.
