The 80th birthday of Tina Louise (Ginger Grant) is on 11 February 2014. Dawn Wells (Mary Ann Summers) is 75... and still adorable. Of the original cast of seven, only these two are still among us as of February 2014.
Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III) died of pneumonia in 1989 at the age of 76. The following year, Alan Hale, Jr. (The Skipper) was battling cancer when he died of respiratory failure at the age of 68.
I had believed for many years that Natalie Schafer (Lovey Howell) was the first of the cast to pass on because I remember having heard a talk show years ago about the efforts that were made to hide Ms. Schafer's true age on the set. Apparently the efforts paid off; many had no idea that she was in her mid-60's when Gilligan's Island was in production. She was 90 when she died of cancer in 1991.
Bob Denver (Gilligan) also fell victim to cancer. He was recovering from an operation pertaining to throat cancer when he died in 2005 at the age of 70. The cast member who passed most recently, Russell Johnson (The Professor), fell victim to kidney failure in 2014 at the age of 89.
