Welsh born singers:

Duffy, Cerys Matthews, Charlotte Church, Tom Jones, Bonnie Tyler, Shakin' Stevens, Amy Wadge

(Duffy, Cerys Matthews and Amy Wadge are fluent in Welsh).

Here are a few Welsh bands:

The Alarm, The Automatic, The Blackout, Budgie, Bullet for my Valentine, Feeder, Funeral for a Friend, Goldie Looking Chain, Lostprophets, Kids in Glass Houses, Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals and The Stereophonics. None of the bands listed above sing Welsh in their songs. (Apart from the Super Furry Animals)

---- Two More Names

The music for the original Shrek film was composed and arranged (and partly sung) by John Cale, a first-language Welsh-speaker from Garnant (near Rhydamman / Ammanford). Cale has also written filmscores for several other modern classic films, and his use of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in the soundtrack of Basquiat was probably the first mainstream exposure for that song.

During the 1960's Cale was the rhythm section and a frequent vocalist with the original Velvet Underground, and he also headlined at the June 1st, 1974 concert (one of the most historic pop concerts of the 1970's - for those who know about it).

Karl Jenkins these days is mainly known as a classical composer (Adiemus is his most popular work), but he also had a career as a singer and instrumentalist during the 1970's and 1980's , with Soft Machine, Mike Oldfield, and other groups.

World wide Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey are probably the front runners. But you have to define 'Welsh' because many singers/musicians may have strong Welsh connections but might not be born in Wales or from a family that considers itself Welsh.

If you factor in heritage it goes much wider, some argue that Elvis had Welsh roots and even John Lennon had a Welsh connection. If you're interested in these you can find more at the original Welsh interest website famouswelsh.com
