The animals are called Rhosgobel Rabbits. The translation from the Elvish is "brown or russet settlement", and Radagast's home near Beorn's was called Rhosgobel. Remember that Radagast was the brown wizard. The rabbits do not appear in the book.

Radagast the Brown There is also mention of two 'Blue wizards,' but no name is given. There is also a theory that Radagast the Brown is in league with Sauron, but this is effectivley dispelled when you go deeper into the lore. Sauron is also known as 'the necromancer' in the hobbit, as his spirit form.
