James Paul McCartney is a musician, composer and singer. He sang, composed and played several Musical Instruments for the legendary pop group The Beatles where he was part of the songwriting partnership of Lennon/McCartney.
McCartney was born in Liverpool, England in 1942. McCartney's father was a proficient amateur musician. McCartney met Lennon in 1957 and joined Lennon's band (then called the Quarry Men) in the same year. The band eventually became the Beatles in 1960, comprising Lennon and McCartney together with George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Stuart Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his artistic career, but died of a brain hemorrhage the following year. The band replaced Pete Best with Ringo Starr in 1962 to form the well known line-up.
In the Beatles career, Lennon and McCartney wrote a string of hits that helped propel the Beatles to unprecedented (and unrepeated) fame. Lennon and McCartney were called the greatest composers since Beethoven and the greatest songwriters since Schubert. The Beatles broke up in 1970; any thoughts of a reunion were dispelled by Lennon's murder in 1980. McCartney continued a successful solo career.
Highlights of McCartney's career include "Yesterday"; the most covered song in American history and "Mull of Kintyre"; the best selling non-charity song in UK history. He has 60 gold records and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful singer/songwriter in history.
McCartney has been nominated for an Academy Award three times; twice as a solo artist and once with the Beatles (for best original song - "Let It Be"). He was successful for the joint nomination.
He was knighted in 1997.
