Elizabeth Bishop was born on February 8, 1911 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Bishop was the only child of William T. Bishop and Gertrude May Bishop. Her father worked as the vice president of the Boston-based construction company. William Bishup suffered from kidney disease for many years and soon died on October 13, 1911. Bishop was only 8 months old at the time. Her mother soon after words faced many breakdowns and mental issues. She was taken away from her mother at the age of 5 and had to live with her grandparents in Nova Scotia. Mean while her mother was sent to sanitarium in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It was there that she died in May, 1934. Bishup was forced to move to her fathers grandparents in their mansion in Worcester (where she experienced many bad times), then she was allowed to live with her maternal aunt, Maud Shepherdson, and her husband, George. There she was very happy. They sent Bishop to the Walnut Hill School (1927 to 1930), where she published writings in "The Blue Pencil", The schools literary magazine. In 1930, Bishop attended as a freshman at the Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She was majored in English literacy. During her years at Vassar she published many poems and short stories in literary journals. In The March of 1934, Bishop met Marianne Moore, creating a friendship that encouraged her to become a poet like Moore. Soon she graduated from Vassur college in June 1934 and moved to New York City. There she decided that she would become a writer.
