In the beginning, A is Mona. Hanna realizes that Mona is A and Mona does not want anyone to know so she runs Hanna over leaving her in a coma. When Hanna comes out of the coma, she cannot remember who A is. She regains her memory at the end of the fourth book in the series and tells the others who A is at which point Mona is killed. With Mona out of the picture, Alison, who has been alive the entire time, becomes A. Alison had a twin sister named Courtney who was mentally unstable. Because of her mental state, Courtney was put in a mental hospital. She escaped, hid in her house, pretended to be her sister, which caused Alison to be sent to the mental hospital, and then continued her act as Alison to Alison's friends for months. Alison escaped the mental institution, murdered her sister and became the second A.

In the book's, "A" is Mona. But in the series the producer said they will change it up so it's not Mona and it will be someone different. :)

Well the song on pll talks about a locket in the pocket. And two can keep a secret if one of them is dead. In the book there was a locket. I believe Allison is 'a.' that she did have a twin sister, that's why the song refers to two can keep a secret. I think the locket is buried in Courtney's pocket.
