I did not hear about him until 1998 with the Marshal Mathers L.P. which was instant success. The way I understand is that a radio friend that new of Eminem (or one of his pals) slipped a tape to someone that got it in front of Dr. Dre. As soon as Dre heard it the Dr. knew he had a champion in his midst and flew Eminem out to California. I am sure Slim Shady had much local success before this as he was well know for his skills as a battle rapper.

He was originally discovered by Jeff Bass, which he released two albums. The albums (Infinite and Slim Shady EP) were released on a low-scale production. Dr. Dre gave him a real chance, and the Slim Shady LP was released on a high-scale production and was a hit.
