Glenn Miller.

More...The melody began as a composition-theory exercise when Miller was studying with Dr. Joseph Schillinger. It had several titles, including Gone With the Dawn and Now I Lay Me Down to Weep, but when he decided to use the tune as his theme song these were considered to be too "down". Frankie Carle had recorded a hit version of Sunrise Serenade, so someone (Miller? a person at RCA? It's never been documented clearly) decided that the opposite of sunrise would be an appropriate name. The rest, of course, was history.
