There was never a 5-member Tower of Power band. Emilio's original band, The Motowns, started small. As it grew and Emilio added horns, he changed the name to Tower of Power.
Here's the lineup from their first album, East Bay Grease, 1971:
Rufus Miller - lead vocals
Greg Adams - Trumpet and flugelhorn
Mic Gillette - lead trumpet and Trombone
Steve Kupka - baritone sax
Emilio Castillo - tenor sax
Skip Mesquite - lead tenor sax
Francis "Rocco" Prestia - bass
Willie Fulton - guitar
David Garibaldi - drums
In the 1972 album, Bump City, Rufus Miller was replaced as lead singer by Rick Stevens, and Brent Byars (congas) was added.
In the 1973 album, Tower of Power, Chester Thompson was added as a keyboardist, Rick Stevens was replaced by Lenny Williams, Willie Fulton was replaced by Bruce Conte, and Skip Mesquite was replaced by Lenny Pickett.
