Tally is a 15 year old girl who still lives in her town of Uglyville, and she attempts to see her best friend Peris, who now lives in New Pretty Town. When the trip goes wrong, Tally meets a girl named Shay who is exactly her age. Shay tells Tally of a place called the Smoke, and tries to convince her to runaway there. When Tally decides to stay, Shay runs off on her own. On Tally's birthday she is taken to the evil Dr. Cable, who forces Tally to go and track down the Smoke. When Tally reaches the Smoke, she meets a few of Shays Ugly friends. There is David, where Tally is HIS love interest, and there is also Croy, and David's parents Maddy and Az. Close to the end, Tally and David meet a few tricky Uglies named An, Sussy, and Dex.
