In the first four books, Mona is A because she found Alison's diary and finds out all the girls secrets. Once Mona dies, Lucas takes over as the role of A. it can not be Alison because the girls had already found out that -A is a normal student who goes to their school at Rosewood if it were Alison they would have spotted her so quick because she is suppose to be dead. Alison could have never taken Mona place as A- because they never liked each other.( I don't know about this answer....)

Different : Courtney is the one who dies not Ali and Courtney was the one who was friends with the liars, Courtney had mental problems that is why she always made her friends do crazy things. Alison and Courtney got switched so the real Alison went to the mental place and Courtney was in Alisons place. Mona wanted revenge so she was the first A ( she wanted revenge because courtney and the liars always picked on her). Then when mona died Ian took over he tried to kill spencer because she knew too much. Ali kills him and is A . She was really best friends with Mona and the liars ruined her life.
