No movie has ever swept all four Academy Awards for acting. The last time a film had nominations in each category was when David O. Russell's 2013 comedy/drama "American Hustle" earned nods for Best Actor (Christian Bale), Best Actress (Amy Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper) and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence).

Russell's 2012 comedy/drama "Silver Linings Playbook" also earned nominations in every acting category: Best Actor (Cooper), Best Actress (Lawrence, who won), Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress (Jacki Weaver).

The 1981 drama "Reds" received mentions for Best Actor (Warren Beatty), Best Actress (Diane Keaton), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson) and Best Supporting Actress (Maureen Stapleton). Only Stapleton received an acting Oscar.

Two films have earned three of the four acting awards. "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951) produced winners for Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden) and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter). Twenty-five years later, winners for "Network" were: Best Actor (Peter Finch, who won posthumously), Best Actress (Faye Dunaway) and Beatrice Straight (Best Supporting Actress).

What is the difference between an Oscar and an Academy Award?

No, and Academy Award is not exactly the same thing as an Oscar (but almost). An Academy Award is an award presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy presents about seven different types of awards. The most popular award that they present is officially known as the Academy Award of Merit (Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture, etc). The prize for winning this award is the Oscar statuette, so most people refer to the award as the Oscar. Some of the other award winners also receive the Oscar statuette, and some of the other award winners receive plaques or scrolls. One of the awards is always a bust instead of the Oscar statuette. A couple of times the Oscar statuette has been modified for special awards. Shirley Temple received a pint sized Oscar statuette when she was presented with a Special Juvenile Award. And Walt Disney received an Oscar statuette with eight tiny Oscar statuettes when he was presented with a Special Award for the creation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - the first animated feature.Yesbasically the 'oscars' is just a nickname for the academy awards

Who selects nominees for the Oscar Awards?

There are only about 3000 seats in the Kodak Theatre (which is where the Academy Awards are held) so the invitations are extremely exclusive. Not even all of the members of the actual Academy are invited. For someone not directly involved in the film industry to have the opportunity to attend, you'd need to be the guest of someone who was invited.
