There was always a quidditch pitch in Harry Potter; it was a permanant field, like a high school fotball field. It may not have been mentioned as much, but yes it was there. As In the OP (Spoiler ahead) Harry was banned form quidditch by umbrige, it can be safely assumed that that is why it wasnt mentioned
