∙ 13y agoThe town used in the movie is in real life Bodega Bay, CA. Though the scene where you see the town from across the bay it is actually a matte painting.
The Tides restaurant has since been extensively rebuilt but is still open for business and the schoolhouse and church are pretty much as they were in the movie.
The scene near the beginning where Tipi Hedron crosses the road in San Francisco (where Hitchcock makes his cameo) before approaching the pet store was filmed in Union Square. It then cuts to a studio set of the outside of the store.
