When Joan Crawford came to Hollywood she was billed as Lucille Lesuer. Louis B. Mayer thought that it was a good name for a hooker, but not for a movie star. There was a contest for people to come up with their new movie stars name. One woman came up with a name with Joan as the first name but unfortunately there was another person who went by that name so they added Crawford to it. At first Joan did not like it and told her friends to call her Billy (a nickname)
