Where is Hogwarts school located?

Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in northern Scotland.

It's said to be north of Edinburgh and closer to Aberdeen and is near a black loch. It is in the mountains, and is unplottable to any muggle.

As Hogwarts is a fictional place it is impossible to find although it is mentioned to be in the north, which suggests it would be somewhere in Scotland. Within the Harry Potter series it is known that there are various charms on the castle that make it impossible for Muggles to find it however wizards and witches would not encounter this problem.

The scenes that take place within Hogwarts were filmed in Alnwick Castle, Gloucester Cathedral, Oxford College and at Leavesden Studios which are real places and can be found in Northumberland, Gloucestershire and Watford respectively.
