the smiths got their name from the couple who turned in the people responsible for the moors murders in england. as the story goes Johnny marr and Morrisy were trying to figure a name out or their band.. previously they read the book beyond belief about the moors murders. and as they pondered the name of their would be band johny marr wrote out the smiths on a piece of card board, and held it up.. the rest is history as they say.. the moors murders is referenced in the song suffer the little children
