George Washington died at his home Mount Vernon in Virginia on December 14 1799. He had been suffering from a throat infection for several days prior to his death. On the day of his death Washington was surrounded by his family and staff. After his death his body was embalmed and placed in a mahogany casket with a lead lining. He was then transported to the state capital in Richmond where he was buried with a Masonic funeral ceremony.
