I had some success breeding a male Xiphophorus helleri(swordtail) with female Poecilia reticulata (guppies) back in the early 1990's. Although of different genera, these two freshwater aquarium fish are in the same family. Hybridization may be possible, but it is doubtful that the offspring will be able to reproduce.
Platys are Xiphophorus sp. Mollys are Poecilia sp. As you can see they are of entirely different species and so obviously they can not breed with one another.
