Born on 17th April, 1806, Maniram Dutta Baruah, popularly known as Maniram Dewan was undoubtedly the greatest Assamese of the first half of the 19th century. He was first Assamese Tea planter. He established tea gardens at Chinamara in Jorhat and at Singlou in Sibsagar district. He played an active role in the freedom movement of Assam.Maniram Dewan was hanged to death by the british Court of Law in 1858 at Jorhat, for taking part in Sepoy Mutiny and conspiring against the British Government.
