it doesn't matter. I personally keep up with the anime to the day (you can see me every Thursday with a bowl of ramen at my laptop lol), but before i was up to date, I had watched the movies. I watched many of the movies before i was even close to the episode it came out after, and I can reassure you that the MOVIES HAVE NO CORRELATION WITH THE ANIME. Sure it's the same characters, but the movies don't reference the anime at all. dattebayo!

If you don't watch the Japanese version (with English subtitles if need be) then you're missing half the awesomeness.

You can watch naruto any time you like. It's best to do so after you you've watched a little bit of the anime or manga.
