We'll start with the time period - it probably started in 1968 during the White Album; Ringo walked out of the band. He was persuaded to come back, early in 1969 George left the band - he was persuaded back to finish Let It Be and to record Abbey Road. After Abbey Road, all four knew the game was up.
The "why" is more complicated; however, Paul's explanation is probably the best - it was like being in the army, at some point you have to stop being with your mates all the time, you grow up, get married and start living normal lives - that's what happened to The Beatles.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison had been playing together since 1958. They "turned professional" in 1960. Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best in 1962. They officially broke up in 1970.
On May 13, 1964 they touched down at Darwin Airport to start their Australian tour without Ringo.

The impossible and the unthinkable had happened. The greatest band in the world was no more.
The band had been growing apart for years. The Let It Be recordings were particularly acrimonious. The official breakup was announced in April 1970 in a press release that accompanied the arrival of Paul McCartney's first solo album, McCartney. When asked for the reasons behind the breakup of The Beatles, Paul said, "Personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family."

The Beatles were on of the biggest bands. They had a lot to do with music history and Beatlemania was a huge thing in the 1960's. In both America and Britain, the Beatles were huge.
