Some people would consider the pilot of Happy Days to be the segment of an episode of "Love, American Style" called "Love and the Happy Days", which originally aired 25 February 1972. Almost two years later, on 15 January 1974, "Happy Days" premiered with a few cast changes from the "Love, American Style" segment:

  • Tom Bosley replaced Harold Gould as Howard Cunningham.
  • Erin Moran replaced Susan Neher as Joanie Cunningham.
  • Gavin O'Herlihy replaced Ric Carrott as Chuck Cunningham. Then at the beginning of Season 2, Randolph Roberts replaced Gavin O'Herlihy. However, Mr. Roberts appeared in only two episodes, the Season 2 Premier and that year's Christmas episode. The character moved away to college (university for y'all across the pond), but at some point later he mysteriously ceased to exist; even his own father had no memory of him years later, as he expressed his pride in "his two children".
  • The Fonzie character was added, played by Henry Winkler. At that time the producers thought it would be too extreme for Fonzie to wear a leather jacket on prime-time TV, so Fonzie started off wearing a white poplin jacket. That's ironic because Fonzie's leather jacket eventually became such an icon of 1970s culture in the U.S. that the jacket Winkler wore is on display at the Smithsonian.

Also, in the 2nd episode of "Happy Days", the name of their favorite hang-out changed from Arthur's to Arnold's, and none of them seemed to notice. (Maybe Chuck is hanging out at Arthur's in a parallel universe???)

Just as the original setting of "That '70s Show" was mid-1970s Milwaukee, the original setting of "Happy Days" was mid-1950s Milwaukee. (So when does "That '90s Show" begin production?)
